10 rules to prevent back pain

  1. Avoid movements which may be traumatic for the back.
  2. Avoid sitting for long periods.
  3. In case of heavy work, wear a protective support for the lumbar area (available in orthopaedic shops).
  4. Sleep on an orthopaedic mattress and base of the bed (taking care to keep the lumbar muscles warm, if necessary wearing an elastic support.
  5. Avoid overweight.
  6. Don’t smoke! Smoking reduces the oxygenation of the back.
  7. Try to reduce stress both physical and psychological.
  8. Ladies are advised not to wear high heels.
  9. Carry out two or three postural exercises every day to relax the back muscles.
  10. Do mild aerobic physical activity (walking, cycling, jogging, swimming) at last once a week.
